There are three different types of travel (Fast, Slow, and Deep), which fulfill travelers in different ways. Fast Travel is for the individual who wants to check countries off their bucket list and only visits the “must-sees” of those countries. They are there for a good time, not a long one. Slow Travel is for the individual who stays for an extended period of time in a country. They are mindful of the impact of their travels and connect with the place on a much deeper level.
With these descriptions, you may be wondering, “wouldn’t Slow Travel and Deep Travel be the same then?” While they are similar and fulfill mutual aspects, they are slightly different.
If you are one who wants to travel deeply but doesn’t have the time or opportunity to extend your stay – Deep Travel is the solution for you!
What is Deep Travel?
If Fast Travel and Slow Travel had a baby, it would be Deep Travel. Deep Travel is about gaining new perspectives, expanding your mindset, and forming a deeper connection with the place you are visiting.
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes
Marcel Proust
This approach to traveling is similar to Slow Travel but is for those who do not have the time or opportunities to stay for extended periods of time in a new place.
How do you Deep Travel? Tips.
- Take the “Road Less Taken”
- Don’t make the “must-sees” the sole purpose or priority of your trip. Focus on visiting hidden gems that are mainly frequented by the locals – as well as the gems you can learn from.
- Go to the non-“Instagrammable” / non-trendy locals, restaurants, bars, parks, and museums.
- Stranger Not Always Danger // Talk with the locals
- One of the best ways to build a deeper connection is by getting to know the locals, whether it be a quick exchange or a longer one.
- Be, and stay, openminded
- Get out of your comfort zone to the best abilities – attend events, try new foods, and say yes to everything.
- Learn the language
- Attempting to learn the mother tongue of the place you are visiting automatically helps you immerse into deeper levels. Locals will also recognize and appreciate an outsider trying to learn their language and will become more open to forming a connection.
