1. Gluten Free T’s Kitchen (100% Gluten Free)
- ⭐️ Rating: 4.5 on Find Me Gluten Free
- 📍 Location: 7 Chome-8-5-2F Roppongi, Minato City, Tokyo 106-0032, Japan
- 💰 Price Range: ¥2,000 – 3,000
- 🤩: Offers
- ⏰ Hours: Wednesday to Monday from 12–4 PM and 5–10 PM
Located right outside Shibuya City, in Minato City, is the first certified gluten free restaurant in all of Asia! How crazy is that? Instagram
Gluten Free T’s is a small restaurant with an ample variety of foods. Here you can get everything from traditional Japanese dishes, to American breakfast in the morning, and so forth. My personal favorite dishes were the Cajun Fried Chicken, which is their specialty, the Yakiniku rice place, and their Spiced Muffin.
During my time in Tokyo, this is the restaurant I’ve visited the most due to the delicious food and the safety it promises to us celiacs. Gluten Free T’s is simply a must visit when in Tokyo, Japan!

2. RICE HACK Gluten-Free Bakery (100% Gluten Free)
- ⭐️ Rating: 5 on Find Me Gluten Free
- 📍 Location: 5 Chome-16-5 Jingumae, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0001, Japan
- 💰 Price Range: ¥1,000–2,000
- 🤩: Offers the BEST
- ⏰ Hours: Thursday to Sunday from 11AM to 5PM. May sell out.
Located right in the heart of Shibuya, Rice Hack is a delicious gluten free bakery with an ample menu. Here you can get pizza, calzone with a Japanese twist, cheesy bread and so many other goodies. Rice Hack is strictly a bakery, there are no tables to sit at – but there are two benches dedicated to its clients.
This is a very popular place, so there will be times where the bakery sells out early on. I recommend coming here earlier in the day, and buying several baked goods that you can keep at your hotel or apartment, for days that may be harder than others.
Tokyo is a HUGE city, it could be its own country really, so there will be times where gluten free restaurants/bakeries are way out of reach. This is why buying several baked goods here is an important tip I can offer!

3. RizLabo Kitchen
- ⭐️ Rating: 5 on Find Me Gluten Free
- 📍 Location: 4 Chome-15-2 Jingumae, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0001, Japan
- 💰 Price Range: ¥2,000–3,000
- 🤩: Offers the BEST Pancakes
- ⏰ Hours: from 12 – 5PM every day. Closes at 5:30PM on Wednesday.
Did you even visit Japan if you didn’t indulge in it’s fluffy, souffle pancakes?
Beloved amongst locals, non-celiacs and celiacs, this is a very popular restaurant where you can expect longer lines and “sold-outs”. Unfortunately, I was the unlucky person to encounter both long lines and early closure due to the selling out, but thankfully I got to enjoy souffle pancakes in Kanazawa and Kyoto.
This is the perfect place to visit for a later brunch, or as a dessert/snack after lunch. With the amount of walking you’ll be doing in Tokyo, this “fuel” is a great way to recharge!
4. My Bahn Mi (100% gluten free)
- ⭐️ Rating: 5 on Find Me Gluten Free
- 📍 Location: Japan, 〒150-0001 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Jingumae, 1 Chome−20−4 Axia原宿 103
- 💰 Price Range: ¥1,000–2,000
- 🤩: Offers the BEST Bahn Mi sandwiches
- ⏰ Hours: Temporarily Closed
Oh My Bahn Mi! Located in Shibuya, this restaurant is popular for it’s delicious, gluten free Bahn Mis.
One of the small heart breaks during my time in Tokyo was My Bahn Mi being temporarily closed due to staff training. If you get to visit, please let me know how you enjoyed it – I will live vicariously through you!
5. Nabezo Shinjuku Sanchome
- ⭐️ Rating: 5 on Find Me Gluten Free
- 📍 Location: Japan, 〒160-0022 Tokyo, Shinjuku City, Shinjuku, 3 Chome−30−11, Takano2, 8F
- 💰 Price Range: $$
- 🤩: Offers the BEST Hot Pot (Shabu Shabu) and is all you can eat food bar.
- ⏰ Hours every day from 11:30 AM–3 PM and 5–10:30 PM.
Located in the heart of Shinjuku, Nabezo Shinjuku Sanchome is a delicious Hot Pot restaurant that offers gluten free options. When you enter the restaurant, mention your allergy, and they will let you know what is gluten free and also provide you with gf soy sauce.
The way this restaurant works is you pick the broth for your hot pot, the meat, and then you have a self-serve, all you can eat bar. The only gluten free broth option is Shabu Shabu, which is delicious.
You do receive only one pot split into two, so if your travel buddy is not gluten free – they will need to be careful when placing their foods in their broth, to ensure nothing splashes in your gluten free side.

6. Avan Gluten Free Cafe
- ⭐️ Rating: 5 on Find Me Gluten Free
- 📍 Location: Japan, 〒150-0045 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Shinsencho, 1−20 松濤ビル 1F
- 💰 Price Range: ¥1,000–2,000
- 🤩: Offers the BEST gluten free churros!
- ⏰ Hours: Every week day from 10 – 5PM, and Weekend 10 – 6PM.
If I could’ve packed this gluten free cafe in my suitcase and brought it home with me… I absolutely would’ve!
Located in Shibuya, Avan is the coziest cafe you can find and is the perfect place to slow down. Not only is the interior cozy, but they have a movie screen for people to enjoy movies or shows!
Avan’s main star is their ample choices of phenomenal gluten free churros, along with some food bowls for lunch. I got to try their season special, Matcha Churro, and their regular sugar-covered churros. All the churros were phenomenal, especially the matcha one as it offers the perfect balance between sweet and bitter.

7. Shimbu Sakiya Ramen
- ⭐️ Rating: 5 on Find Me Gluten Free
- 📍 Location: 2 Chome-10-3 Dogenzaka, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0043, Japan
- 💰 Price Range: ¥1,000–2,000
- 🤩: Offers the BEST gluten free ramen
- ⏰ Hours: Sunday to Thurday from 11AM – 4:30AM, Friday to Saturday from 11AM – 5:30 AM.
When in Japan, you CANNOT miss out Ramen! Located in Shibuya, this cozy little restaurant offers a fair amount of gluten free options, including ramen and gyoza.
Something unique about this restaurant is that you order and pay outside on a large machine/screen. Once you order your food, the machine prints tickets that you hand over to one of the bussers when you enter.
Insider Tip: Something I learned during my visit is that the machine has a glitch, and does not accept more than three 1000 yen bills. Due to this, make sure to come to the restaurant with 5000 yen bill to avoid the troubles I encountered!

8. Miller Cake Store (ミラーケーキストア グルテンフリー焼き菓子とケーキ)
- ⭐️ Rating: 5 on Find Me Gluten Free
- 📍 Location: Japan, 〒153-0042 Tokyo, Meguro City, Aobadai, 1-chōme−28−9 タイガーマンション 201
- 💰 Price Range: ¥1,000–3,000
- 🤩: Offers the BEST
- ⏰ Hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 12 – 7PM. Closes at 6PM on Sundays, and is closed on Mondays.
If you want to treat yourself to some delicious cakes and baked goods, the Miller Cake Store is a great place to visit! Here all the baked goods are made with rice flour, as the owner’s mission is to share the Japanese rice culture with others.
9. BREIZH Café Crêperie
- ⭐️ Rating: 5 on Find Me Gluten Free
- 📍 Location: Japan, 〒151-8580 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Sendagaya, 5-chōme−24−2 新宿タカシマヤ 13F
- 💰 Price Range: $$
- 🤩: Offers the BEST gluten free crepes
- ⏰ Hours
Who doesn’t love a good gluten free crêpe?😍
Located in Shibuya, BREIZH Café Crêperie offers an ample variety of crepes – from savory, to sweet, flambé and so forth. Their menu makes this Crêperie perfect for any meal of the day, or even a delicious pick-me-up snack.
This Crêperie is not dedicated gluten free, but they do have 100% buckwheat gluten free mix and are very aware about cross contamination.
Something that is important to note, they do not have separate cooking surfaces for the crêpes, but they will clean them to minimize cross contamination.
Convenience Stores Safe Snacks: Lawson, 7/11, Family Mart
From time to time, Konbini (Convenience) Stores will be your best friends. Here are some konbini foods that are gluten free!
- Boiled Eggs. These boiled eggs are like no other – they are perfectly gooey and flavorful.😍
- Meiji Chocolate Covered Almonds and Macadamia nuts.
- SoyJoy Bars.
- (With Caution) Grilled Salmon Flake Onigiris. This has been a hot debate amongst celiacs. I specifically had Lawson’s Grilled Salmon Flake Onigiris and always felt great – and so have other fellow celiacs. I cannot attest to those from 7/11 and Family Mart.
Important Note: In Japan, they are not required to call out gluten in the nutrition boxes on packaged foods – only wheat. Due to this, just because something seems gluten free – it doesn’t mean that it is. Always search everything up online, and try to avoid foods that don’t say “gluten free”.
Where to Stay in Tokyo as a Celiac
The absolute best area to stay as a celiac, or gluten intolerant, person in Tokyo is Shibuya! Shibuya is the area where most of these gluten free restaurants are located – and trust me, you want to stay as close as possible.
Tokyo is a humongous city, and if you’re outside Shibuya, you’ll always have a minimum* 30-40 minute commute on the subway.😅
Protect Yourself Abroad!
This is the last thing anyone wants to think about, but if you have severe symptoms to gluten or other allergens, it’s crucial to be ready and protect yourself.
I strongly recommend getting travel medical coverage because you never know what could happen, and when you may need it. Nomad Insurance starts at just $56.28 per 4 weeks, and while I hope you never have to use it, it’s there in case of emergencies – which can rack up expenses.
Covering people in 185+ countries for medical emergency, SafetyWing is a flexible and affordable insurance for any of your travels!🗺️
Gluten Free Tokyo FAQs
Is Japan Gluten Free Friendly?
Overall Japan is not a very gluten free friendly country. Despite this, traveling in Japan with a gluten allergy is certainly doable – especially with proper research done.
Is Gluten Intolerance Common in Japan?
There is a small population of gluten intolerant people in Japan, but almost no celiac population.
How hard is it to be Celiac in Japan?
Being celiac in Japan is not for the faint of heart, and it is something you need to mentally prepare yourself for. Unfortunately, with celiac disease being close to non-existent in Japan, gluten is not something the locals are too familiar with.
Adding to this, you will find that there are many foods that would seem gluten free but aren’t. For example, rice vinegar tends to have malt – meaning sushi rice is not always gluten free.
