Flamenco is a synonym for Spain and is an art to experience at least once during your Spain travels. With that said, you simply visit one of these flamenco shows in Granada!💃😍
Flamenco is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since November 2010 and is born in the Roma Community back in the 15th century. Due to their frequent travels and moves, the Roma community took everything they learned and discovered and created the art of Flamenco out of it. What is Flamenco? The Flamenco art is composed of three components: cante, baile, and toque (singing, dancing, and guitar playing).
Flamenco’s roots trace back to various places in Andalusia, like Sevilla and Granada, and there are several types of flamenco. The “Zambra Gitana” style specifically originates from Granada’s Sacramento caves and is the style you will find in most of these venues. “Zambra Gitana” takes inspiration from Moor weddings and has three main dances – la Alboreá, la Cachucha y la Mosca.
Keep reading the blog to discover the 8 best flamenco shows in Granada and everything you need to know about each venue!👇

Two disclaimers:
- Gitana/o is often treated as a racial slur towards the Roma Community. Many members of the Roma community who perform Flamenco, use the word in their songs and to describe a specific style of Zambra flamenco. When you read this word through the blog, it is because the Roma Community uses it to name their art style – “Zambra Gitana”. I do not support the use of words with racist intent.

It is important to note that Flamenco is an intimate and passionate art that is usually performed in small venues – traditionally Las Cuevas de Sacromonte (the caves of Sacromonte). If you prefer larger spaces, tablao venues may be a better option for you.

About the Venue
Located in the Sacromonte district, this is the oldest Zambra of Sacromonte, dating back to 1913. The name of the venue comes from María Cortes, a renowned flamenco dancer, and singer known as “La Canastera”. La Canastera was born in 1913, and her artistic name comes from her dad, who was a local craftsman specializing in wicker baskets.
This is a traditional cave venue that’s decorated with various Sacromonte craftwork and endless photographs of its famous visitors. This venue, nicknamed “cathedral of Flamenco art” is the best conserved and most emblematic of Flamenco houses.
La Canastera was one of the most representative artists of Granada’s Flamenco and was known to be a “one-of-a-kind” person with her overpowering personality. María was the only person of Roma background considered as one of Granada’s most important citizens of the 20th century. This recognition is extremely important to the Roma community, as it has always been mistreated and disregarded.
This venue is the cave where María Cortes and her family lived and where they hosted people who wanted to experience genuine “Zambra Gitana”. Maria’s son, Enrique, transformed her home into a venue for flamenco shows and a cultural museum. The performers are all María’s descendants, who keep her traditions alive to this day.

Frequently Asked Questions on Flamenco Shows
Do I need to make a reservation?
You can definitely buy tickets for the day of the performance for some venues, but to make sure you get the ideal ticket I suggest making a reservation at least a few days in advance – especially if it involves dinner.
Can I take photos or videos during the performance?
Most venues will allow photos and videos, as long as they are without flash and do not distract the performer. This is a very intimate performance, so I strongly suggest focusing on staying present during the performance and enjoying it to the fullest. If allowed, take a couple of pictures, or videos, but don’t let a “good shot” be the priority of the experience.
Is there a dress code for attending a Flamenco show?
There is no dress code but is definitely a good occasion to dress nicer. I personally treated my Flamenco show experience as a date night experience and dressed accordingly.
When should I arrive at the venue?
Some venues will explicitly mention when people should start arriving. Overall, it is recommended to get there about 20 minutes prior to the show to help you get your ideal seating.
Conclusion
Flamenco is a beautiful art that should be experienced at least once – whether it’s within the walls of a Sacromonte cave, outdoors in the iconic Plaza de España in Sevilla, and so on. This is an intimate and passionate art and is always mesmerizing to see how much power and intention are behind every artists’s move.😍
